Notes from session

  • Technology book, first edition submitted
    • Summarized CMB technologies
    • First edition did not provide prioritization of R&D topics
  • Next step
    • R&D prioritization; define our overall development plan to help funding agencies and to org our effort
    • Create risk, opportunity, impact assessment matrix
      • Matrix = science impact, schedule, cost vs likelihood against strawman plan and schedule
    • Hold WG meetings open to all
      • Agree on which category, subcategory, and topics to cover
      • Would like to work on Simulation/Analysis/DAQ assessment with Sim/Comp working group
      • Let folks divide into subgroups per category
      • Agree on assessment metrics
      • Agree on timeline (next S4 meeting is a target for a mile stone)
    • Combined call (once a month) to cross-calibrate across all categories
  • Concerns
    • It is challenging to make correct assessment without solid understanding of science target and measurement requirements → We’ll start by discussing how to organize ourselves. CDT report will provide starting strawman.
    • We haven’t done this before → We’ll get some project management types at labs to help
    • This is a way to assess technologies and new opportunities for future R&Ds. We do NOT want to down select technology for CMB-S4 by making this matrix.
    • Important to correctly set granularity of assessment → Should we get multiple estimates per item? Will figure this out.
    • Make sure to cover technologies from Technology book and ones we might have missed
    • Can we fairly assess emerging/new technologies against more established/safe option?
    • Get opinions from many experts
    • Naive matrix will now show dependencies. So should think about how to handle this.

Action items/Next steps
