Technical working groups are coordinated by the subsystem L2 scientists under the auspices of the Project Office.
Detectors
- Description: Designing, developing, and fabricating wafers of high-sensitivity detectors to measure the temperature and polarization of mm-wave photons at each of the CMB-S4 observing frequencies.

Readout
- Description: Developing, building and testing the superconducting circuits, wiring, and room-temperature electronics that will bias the detectors to sit at their transition and will measure, amplify, and digitize their signals to send to data acquisition, and delivering this readout subsystem to module assembly & testing for integration.

Module Assembly & Testing
- Description: Assembling the detector wafers, cryogenic readout, and microwave coupling into integrated detector modules, verifying and characterizing their performance, and delivering them for deployment in the large and small aperture telescopes.

Large Aperture Telescopes
- Description: Developing three Large Aperture Telescopes and the associated receivers to enable the legacy survey from Chile and the delensing survey from the South Pole, including the telescope specifications and engineering, receiver optics, cryogenics, mechanical systems, and supports for the detector modules.

Small Aperture Telescopes
- Description: Providing design guidance for the Small Aperture Telescopes, optimized to produce CMB-S4’s extremely deep B-mode measurements at degree-scales, including the cryogenic telescope optics, the receiver cryostats and cooling systems from ambient temperature to the 100 mK focal planes, the magnetic and RF shielding, the 3-axis telescope mounts, and the external optical shielding.

Data Acquisition & Control
- Description: Building the software required to control, monitor, and aggregate data from all telescopes at each site, including detector readout, telescope platforms, cryogenics, calibrators, and associated auxiliary hardware.

Data Management
- Description: Developing the data management subsystem, from the raw data coming off the telescopes to well-characterized single-frequency sky maps and transient alerts, and deploying it to support the development and validation of the experiment design.

Low-ell BB
- Description: Preparing forecasts and analysis pipelines to search for primordial gravitational waves using deep polarization maps from Small Aperture Telescopes delensed with the maps from the Large Aperture Telescopes.
